Cariboo Gate Foundation

A place to play, train and belong.

A sports center on the BVE campus in Bweyale: soccer and training turf, basketball and tennis courts, a running track and a gym, open to young people from the settlement and the surrounding community.

  • Status Planning · open for funding
  • Budget $1,200,000
  • People served 1,500 young people a year
  • Location Bweyale, Kiryandongo (BVE campus)
  • Timeline 2027–2030
The need

Why this matters.

Many young people in and around the settlement have lived through war and displacement, and have almost nowhere safe to play, train or meet. Sport gives them structure, health and friends, and it helps people learn to trust again.

Sport also brings refugee and host-community youth together. Teams and tournaments build the ties a settlement needs, and a gym and track give people with and without disabilities a place to build strength and confidence.

What we're building

The plan.

A phased sports center beside Bweyale Vocational Education: a soccer turf pitch, a smaller training turf, basketball courts, tennis courts, a running track and a gym with changing rooms, water, toilets, solar power and lighting. It supports the Foundation's work with orphans, people with disabilities, widows and families in extreme poverty, who get priority places, alongside local youth. Coaches are trained locally.

Who benefits

  • Orphans, young people with disabilities and children from families in extreme poverty, with priority places
  • BVE students and local youth, boys and girls
  • Local coaches, trainers and builders employed along the way

Accountability

How your gift is protected.

  • Written agreement

Every project has a signed agreement with Bweyale Vocational Education covering scope, budget, timeline and reporting.

  • Staged payments

Money is released phase by phase, only after the previous phase has been inspected and the receipts checked.

  • Evidence, not promises

Site photos, inspection notes and receipts arrive with each payment request and are reviewed by our board.

  • Open reporting

Funders get quarterly updates. Everything is summarized in our annual report and public CRA filings.

We follow the Canada Revenue Agency's guidance for charities that fund work through a partner abroad: due diligence, a written agreement, staged payments and regular reporting.

Questions

Good questions, straight answers.

Why build a sports center when water and classrooms are needed?

It is planned alongside our core work and funded separately, so no gift to the trades, wells or school is redirected. Sport also supports the counselling program, because it helps young people feel safe, healthy and connected.

Who will run it?

The center will be run with BVE and a community sports committee, with trained local coaches. Cariboo Gate funds construction and the start-up of coaching and upkeep.

Who gets to use it?

Priority places go to orphans, people with disabilities, widows' families and families in extreme poverty. The rest of the community, including local schools and teams, can use it on a published timetable.

How will it be kept up?

The plan includes a maintenance fund and a small booking fee for outside groups, with all income spent on upkeep. These details are still being worked out.

Will I get a tax receipt?

Yes. Eligible gifts of $20 or more receive an official donation receipt. If your company would like visible recognition beyond a thank-you, we treat the payment as a sponsorship instead — the partner page explains the difference.

What if the phase I fund is already covered?

Extra gifts go to the next phase of the same project unless you tell us otherwise. We will never redirect a designated gift to a different project without asking you first.

Fund the next phase

Help us start Site, survey & design.

Phase 1 needs $48,000 more to get under way (2027). Every gift, whatever the size, goes into finished and inspected work.
